Favorite Britcoms?

I'm sitting here watching one of my favorite Britcom tonight (Are You Being Served?) & though I love the show, it's sad to see how it had gone downhill ("Jumped The Shark") by the early 80s.

What horrible episodes public tv have been showing in recent weeks. I'll stick to the 70s episodes.

Anyway, I also dig Blackadder, Open All Hours, Vicar of Dibney, Red Dwarf, etc.

Anyone else? Smile

Ohhh yeah! Right here my friend.

When I want cool 1970's style, nothing beats "No, Honestly", one of my favorite comedies. Real-life married couple, Pauline Collins and John Alderton, spend each episode reviewing funny moments in their "television" life. Very funny yet absolutely charming. They do make a cute couple!

Ahh, so you played the "Keeping Up Appearances" card!

Well I raise you by a "Doctor In The House", and watch you laugh!

I had never seen any  Doctor in the House.  I can see now that I shall have to find some episodes.  That clip was hilarious.

After some thought, The wife and I came up with some other Britcoms that we liked (based on the few episodes we had seen).

Hi-De-Hi

Last of the Summer Wine

One Foot in the Grave

My Hero

I'm shocked.. shocked, I tell you... that in this thread about British situation comedies, no one has mentioned Fawlty Towers!!!

Here's a sample (wait through the commercial... it's worth it.

It was a lucky accident that I was living in Phoenix, Arizona when the local PBS station aired the entire "Doctor in the House" series after London Weekend Television made it's "re-formatted for USA" versions available.

The TV series picks up from the popularity of the movie series starting with "Doctor in the House" from 1954, "Doctor at Sea"  from 1955, "Doctor at Large" from 1957; and so on!

The TV series was so popular that it ran from 1969 to 1991, with a break in the 1980's.

Forgive me, I can't resist sharing my favorite episode of Keeping Up Appearances, season 1 episode 4 - "The Charity Shop". This is when I fell for the whole series, it's tooo Funny!

Remember, this is the episode where Hyacinth climbs over the wall in her summer dress! Daddy has to be rescued from marrage scam. And stuffy, old Councillor Nugent angrily returns Rose's naughty string underwear that she donated to the charity shop. The scene where Patricia Routledge tries to pass herself off as a "foreigner in the UK" just cracks me up everytime!:

No mention of Mr. Bean?  That show rocked...even though there were only 13 episodes over a period of six years...

Keeping Up Appearances was quite funny too.

I don't know if you're allowed to express outrage about the omission of a show and then spell it incorrectly...

but you're right on the merits:  Fawlty Towers was a great great show.

I should be whipped unmercifully with a wet noodle for omitting Mister Bean and Fawlty Towers.  Hint, pay close attention to the establishing shot at the beginning of each Fawlty Towers episode.   It is a long shot from the curb encompassing the hotel sign at the street and looking up the grassy terrace to the hotel.  The sign is periodically defaced by local miscreants who rearrange the letters into anagrams of Fawlty Towers.  Naughty?  Yup!  Funny? Absolutely!

Re: Favorite Britcoms?

I have to admit (& this may be blasphemy), I never liked Fawlty Towers.  =/

I tried it when it aired on public tv back in the 80s, but I barely laughed. Maybe I should give it another whirl....

Also, though it had some BRILLIANT moments, I was lukewarm w/ Monty Python.  (*ducks*)

Anyway, I also Really enjoy Chef, The Young Ones, Goodies, French & Saunders & some newer ones:

The IT Crowd, Black Books, & Little Britain. If you haven't seen those, DEF' Youtube em & check em out! Smile

HAH!  Tagged -- thanks for pointing it out.  Through the magic of editing, I'm fixing those now.

I just finished watching the episode I linked to (it's in two parts, by the way.)  Such simple humor, but I was laughing like crazy.  Watch for the rat at the end...
