Were Your Parents Ever Awesome?
Posted: Wed Oct 28, 2009 2:05 pm Central Time
Every day, I scour the Internet looking for fun Retro stuff to blog or tweet about, and today I found something worthy of a thread here, for sure. It's a Tumblr blog called "My Parents Were Awesome" and it's nothing but old photos of folks' parents back when they were young and hip... that grey misty time before they became (at least in the eyes of their kids) old and square.
It's a blast to look through and it makes me want to take the drive down to my mom's place to scour the countless photo albums for pictures of my folks in their miniskirts and fedora hats days.
So: were your parents super cool / awesome in their day? Tell us about it!

my parents still are awesome. my dad actually texts more than i do (not sure if that falls in the awesome category, but oh well).
well, according to my dad, he once rode a motor bicycle on a date, took an airforce driving exam (moving little toy cars through a model of a town) while drunk and passed, and in the winter he and his buddies would sit in a sauna for an hour and then jump in a lake or roll around in the snow outside.
while my mom has always been very academically and professionally focused, she used to (and still does sometimes) get into all kinds of mischief with her sisters. when they were younger, they all sounded the same, so they would often answer for another sibling who wasn't present, and forget to tell that sibling what was asked of them.

Wow.
I just saw "The Ice Storm" for the first time... "key parties" and all... I hope that all worked out better for your folks than it did for the people in that movie! _________________ Matthew Wayne Selznick

My parents gave up all they had and came over to Canada with nothing more than a dream of a better life.
My Father was orphaned because of the second world war (his father, my grand father, was a captain in the Italian army and died in a firefight, his mother died of a broken heart after losing two sons and husband) passed around from family member to family member and at 14, dad had to take care of what was left of his family, his two sisters.
My mother and father moved to Switzerland at 20 years of age but since they couldn't become citizens or own a house(creepy Swiss laws) they came here. With little in terms of money they worked and sacrificed. Bringing two ungrateful spoilt boys into the world raising them, teaching them right from wrong. Making a very comfortable life here, and giving us the opportunity to excel in our chosen careers. So yes, my parents are awesome.
And they did it without being put on a pedestal. _________________

My grandparents are awesome.
My gradmothers familie were banished by the russians in the second world war. As young girls her sister and she lived in steadily fear of them. Later she studied under hard terms became a teacher and raised to girls with almost no money and no future prospects.
My grandfather lost two uncles in the first world war and his father in the second. Later he lived with his uncle and aunt and studied law but because he had to earn money to feed a family, he build up a company with his own hands and worked very hard for it. |

I heard about this on NPR the other day...
Of course my parents are still awsome, but once upon a time they really did some wild things in high school and college (no swinging that I'm aware of). Pictures of them show my mom with really long hair. My dad didn't have long hair, but he looks like lots of other "Joe College" types---a red Hang Ten-type shirt with Bermuda shorts and black-rimmed glasses and a grown-out Ivy-League haircut. As soon as he graduated from college in 1968, he got a draft notice from Uncle Sam...
My dad just recently told me that he and a bunch of college friends were driving back to campus from the beach when they realized they were almost out of money. Between them, that had just enough gas money, but no food money. While driving through a little town in South Georgia, they came to a funeral home packed with people. Those of us in the South know a funeral means lots of prepared food brought by mourners so they stopped in, paid respects to the deceased and were offered dinner---and a plate of fried chicken for the road.
In high school, he and his friends used to sneak out to Interstate 75 at night before it was completed. There they would drag race on a long straight segement before the pavement ended.
My Mom was so impressed with Dr. Spock (the baby doctor, not the Vulcan), and his anti-Vietnam War views she wrote him a letter and received a handwritten response.
Come 1972, their world changed! |
