I love the Dylan version of Watchtower. Like everyone else, I was obvlivious to it for years.

Respect was a cover? Wow.

The Cochran version of Summertime Blues was actually the first one I heard. Love the Blue Cheer version.

I Love Rock and Roll was a cover? Dang.

Suzie Q by CCR was originally done by Dale Hawkins way back in '57.

War by Edwin Star was originally done by The Temptations, but Star gave the song its popular James Brown feel.

rockabilly icon EDDIE COCHRAN's best known song, SUMMERTIME BLUES, was covered by artists in many genres, including THE WHO (rock), BLUE CHEER (heavy metal), JOAN JETT (punk), THE FLYING LIZARDS (new wave), ALAN JACKSON (country), THE LITTLE RIVER BAND, BOBBY VEE, RUSH, THE STRAY CATS, THE OUTSIDERS, BUCK OWENS, SKID ROW, BILLY THORPE, T REX, and many more.  it's been a hit about five times over.  truly one of the all time rock classics!

Isn't that Barefootin'?   I actually thought it was "Bear Pudding" at first.

(Johnny Rivers also does a pretty good rendition of this tune)

On Seger's Nine Tonight album, he mentions that "TTLMLWY" is an "old Memphis song".

Landslide was also covered by the Dixie Chicks.

Also, Fleetwood Mac were the first band to do Black Magic Woman, many years before Stevie Nicks joined.

Wait -- so when Santana did it, they were doing a cover?

Re: Wait, that was a cover?

Good question....

I'm sure I'll be getting a laugh from several other members with my answer. back when Van Halen's "Diver Down" album came out back in the early 80's I thought that VH wrote "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?"  A few years later I discovered that it was originally a Kinks song, and that several other songs VH played were covers as well.

Re: Wait, that was a cover?

from ALL MUSIC GUIDE:

Easily one of the centerpieces of the early Fleetwood Mac canon, "Black Magic Woman" is obviously more well-known as the huge hit single for Santana in 1970. However, this version on its own is indeed striking and far more than just a blueprint. Crossing blues, rock and Caribbean/ calypso music, Peter Green created a unique musical synthesis, and the effect is intoxicating. Lyrically, the song uses some interesting, dark imagery that recalls some early New Orleans blues and Cajun music, and the sense of foreboding is entirely inescapable. On to of all of this is a great left turn at the end of the song, where the band and Green shift into a violent boogie that rides out until the song's dramatic conclusion. All in all, one of the more powerful recordings of the period.

No problem.  Didn't mean to scare you! And thanks for the Valentine, though a little early.

that's right.  BOWIE co-wrote it with the then financially strapped IGGY to help him out.

one of the best things i ever saw IGGY do was a live cover of REBEL REBEL with LENNY KRAVITZ on an old MTV awards show.  there's always been a cool BOWIE/IGGY connection...
