Wham-O Magic Window - 1973-1979

Hey, all..

I was curious to see if anyone else remembers Wham-O's Magic Window from the 1970's?

I'm trying to assemble information about them, and I actually own a few which you can see at the links below. The only one I'm pretty sure that's out there that I don't have is a red, white, and blue Bi-Centennial Magic Window... but I could have dreamed that up.

Check 'em out... and let me know what you think.

Wow...I always wondered what that thing was called! My friend Sue had one in her room for years. In fact, I'm pretty positive she STILL has it in her apartment right now! I remember hanging out in her room after school listening to music and playing with the Magic Window. It was kind of a weird toy...but it was fun to watch the movements of the sand. I didn't know it came with a rotating stand though...hers didn't have the stand. She always had it propped up on her windowsill.

Actually, the "Rotating Magic Window" is a particularly rare seperate product, as opposed to the standard one.

The normal Wham-O Magic WIndow's weren't the rotating variety.

In a year of watching Ebay very carefully, I've only seen a single one of the "roatating" versions, and I bought it.

Haven't seen one in years...I remember it being one of the "trip" items that would show up at parties of the "head" sort back in the day. Cool

Re: Wham-O Magic Window - 1973-1979

I had a Wham-O Magic Window around 1974 or 1975. It took me until 2005 to find the name of it. I remembered that it was a clear, thin oval and that it seemed to have blue and white 'sand' in it, but that's all I could remember. The name of it never stuck in my head. I also never knew there was a pink and white version back then.

I no longer have it, just like most things I had as a kid.

I don't like the version the inventor of the Magic Window is selling now:

There doesn't seem to be enough white 'sand' and one of the things that made the Magic Window kind of fun was its shape. The rectangular shape ruins the effect for me. It's better than nothing, though.

Okay, this is going to sound crazy, but here goes. I've had the pink/white, glow-in-the-dark version of the Window since it came out. Recently, I found I'd inexplicably developed aching, swollen, bleeding gums. This went on for days, until I discovered the Window had somehow gotten under my pillow (I think I set it on the bed when cleaning, then forgot...about the time the gum problem started). Within a day of taking the Window out from under my pillow, the gums were better.

Now, you may know where I'm going with this: did the Window CAUSE the problem, or was it just an alarming coincidence? I need to know, because, with a kid in the house, the wife now wants me to get rid of this possibly-toxic toy! And with good reason, if it's really a problem.

I'm only even entertaining the thought because I know how nefarious US companies have been (and are) in regard to using mildly toxic ingredients in their products (cuz really, who'd expect anybody to SLEEP on one of these things), and it's not much of a stretch to imagine the glowing sand might be...radioactive?

Like I said, I know it sounds crazy, and I'm thinking I should just write to Wham-O about it, but thought I'd see if there's anybody out there who knows anything about the 'toxicity' of the Magic Window sand!

Wow, GH. I don't know what the hell that's supposed to mean...in so many different ways. But it does sound like a Tor Johnson quote!

Thanks for posting this. I totally remember playing with my Magic Window for hours on end. It was a very 'groovy' toy...kinda like a Lava Lamp for kids.
