Those wacky inventors over at the Willy Wonka factory have introduced plenty of innovative confections over the years, from the Everlasting Gobstopper to the Wonka Bar. But one of their most popular creations over the past few decades are Runts. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, you likely remember the small, realistically-shaped, fruit flavored candies that are not only sold in the candy aisle, but also countless gumball-type vending machines around the world.
Introduced by the Willy Wonka Candy Company in 1982, Runts consist of a powdery interior, both sweet and sour in taste that is compacted into the shape of the respective fruit flavor. This interior is then encased in a shiny, hard candy shell. The original Runts roster included orange, strawberry, lime, cherry and banana. More exotic flavors, such as watermelon, pineapple, raspberry and mango, were introduced in recent years. Each flavor is surprisingly accurate. And for those who prefer their confections to be a little less crunchy, Chewy Runts are also available.
Much of what makes food appetizing, candy or otherwise, is it’s appearance. And with Runts, there is just no way to look at a handful of these little glistening treats, each looking like they belong in a dollhouse fruit bowl arrangement, and not start popping them in your mouth by the fistful.
If your a fan of these colorful confections, we welcome all your thoughts in our comments section, as we tip our hats to our good pal, Willy Wonka, for dreaming up yet another great way for us to get our collective sugar fix.
