HI-C

Hi-C

We can trace many of our beloved comfort foods back to the post-war 50s, an era which introduced such future staples as Jello Instant Pudding and Rice-a-Roni. The innovative decade also brought a new fruity beverage in a big tin can called Hi-C. A perfect thirst-quencher on a hot summer's day, and (slightly) healthier than soda pop, kids loved it from the beginning and continue to gulp down glasses of the sweet concoction some sixty years later. Keds

Keds

As any parent can attest, a kid’s energy knows no bounds, and if their footwear isn’t up to the task, it can be decimated quickly from the rigors of playtime. A century ago, kids didn’t even have shoes for play, only those of the leather variety which were considered their “good shoes” – ones that they were expected to keep in pristene condition. If only there was some form of footwear specifically for play, shoes that could get scuffed and dirty without the scorn of a parent’s watchful eye, all would truly be right in the world. Their eventual shoe savior was a company called Keds, who have provided footwear for appreciative kids and adults for nearly a hundred years. Continue reading...

Silly Putty

Silly Putty

What an inert, innocent appearance for such a versatile toy. Silly Putty would just sit there like a lump—literally—until you deigned to pick it up. But then, oh then…it came alive. Well, not really; there was a fair amount of elbow grease involved in getting enjoyment out of the Putty. It bounced; it flowed (if given enough time); it stuck to the wall; it stuck to newsprint and comic books and copied whatever was on the page; it even picked up pet hair and dust, should the average 8-year old feel a sudden urge to clean the living room. It could be kneaded and bent, stretched and flattened. And it owed its existence to an accident. Continue reading...
