Pogo Stick

Pogo Sticks

It sounds like a story right out of Ripley’s Believe it or Not, and it probably contains more fiction than fact - but it’s still too good not to repeat for old time’s sake. In Burma, there lived a poor little shoeless girl named Pogo. Her bare feet made it too difficult to make her daily trek, along the muddy roads filled with jagged rocks, so she could pray at the local temple. Her father finally came upon a solution to her dilemma and fashioned a jumping stick so that she could propel herself over these various obstacles and strengthen her soul without sacrificing her soles. A worldly traveler named George Hansburg happened to witness this miraculous jumping stick in action during one of his trips and decided that the rest of the world could also benefit from Pogo’s jumping stick. Jolly Green Giant

Jolly Green Giant

He was a man of few words, and those he had were clearly plagiarized from Santa Claus. He was green, he was a giant, and had it not been for an extreme makeover, he might never have found his way into our collective hearts. Hawking his wares of freshly canned vegetables, he is none other than the Jolly Green Giant. Continue reading...

Alvin and the Chipmunks

Alvin and the Chipmunks

When Ross Bagdasarian changed his name to David Seville, sped up his recorded voice, and released the single, “The Chipmunk Song,” he never could have fathomed the enormous popularity that would follow. Over a half-century later, his trio of Chipmunks – Alvin, Simon and Theodore – are still going strong, appearing in feature films and delighting young audiences with their squeaky voices and irrepressible charm. Continue reading...

Casper, The Friendly Ghost

Have you ever noticed that the sinister spirits are the ones who get all the press? Today, we thought it was time to give some props to the apparition you couldn’t help but love, Casper, The Friendly Ghost. Continue reading...

Las Vegas

Las Vegas

When parents bring the whole family to Las Vegas these days, the kids really don’t realize just how lucky they have it. Today, most of the bigger hotels do their best to offer a multitude of activities that the whole family can enjoy. Excalibur entertains with jousting matches, Treasure Island provides a spectacular pirates show, and New York, New York offers a thrilling roller coaster. There are ride simulators, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, and a place where you can drink Coca-Cola from around the world, or purchase just about anything M&M's-related that your heart desires. And, as kid that visited Vegas in decades past can readily attest, it wasn't always that way. Continue reading...

Kitchens

Kitchens

Today’s kitchens, with their modern technology, granite countertops and track lighting, are certainly cutting-edge, filled with their nifty gadgets. And yet, they often seem to possess all the inviting warmth of a hospital operating room. Instead, we take a fond look back at the kitchens of yesteryear, the ones run by our parents and grandparents. The ones we stood in while drinking milk from the carton and where we sat staring at every square inch of a Cocoa Puffs box until it was time to catch the school bus. Continue reading...

Circus Peanuts

Circus Peanuts

If there is one candy that people aren’t afraid to voice an opinion on, it is those orange, oddly shaped marshmallow confections known as Circus Peanuts. To some, they are God’s greatest gift to the candy world, worthy of undying devotion. To others, they are more akin to packaging material than a yummy snack. One thing is for certain though - there are very few people that fall into the “undecided” column. Continue reading...

Erector Set

Erector Sets

And for almost a hundred years, Erector Sets have done just that, becoming one of the most iconic building toys of all time. Continue reading...
