Bomb Pops

For many a former kid, the arrival of summer coincided with the joyous ringing of faraway bells, ones that signified the approach of a little white truck, filled to the brim with frozen treats. And assuming your parents were generous with their spare change, you would soon come face to face with a vast menu of choices plastered on the side of the truck. With so many items to choose from, a great many gravitated loyally to the most patriotic of Popsicles - the Bomb Pop. Popular for over 50 years now, they have proven that they are as American as apple pie and Chevrolet.

Bonkers!

For their considerably short existence, those little chewy candy squares known as Bonkers! made quite the impression. Some will remember their soft pliability, others their flavorful punch. And for anyone regularly watching television in the 80s, it was impossibly not to take notice of their humorous commercials that featured giant fruit dropping from the sky and landing on an unwitting bystander. Whatever the reason, they are a candy that remains sorely missed from legions of fans that still wonder whatever happened to their beloved Bonkers!

Bubble Up

Ah, the cool refreshing taste of lemon-lime flavored soda. For those who prefer that particular flavor combination, the mind probably wanders to one of the two iconic brands, 7-Up and Sprite. But nostalgic fans clearly remember another effervescent carbonated beverage that once completed the tasty lemon-lime trilogy, Bubble Up.

Prior to the 1970s, chewing gum was only available in a few incarnations, the vending machine gumball, the stick, and little hard individually-wrapped wads such as Bazooka and Dubble Bubble. But along with disco and CB radios, the 70s will also be remembered for another, and longer-lasting, contribution to the world - the advent of soft gum. And while Bubblicious wasn't the first on the market, its full spectrum of delicious flavors has kept it one of the biggest selling soft gum products of all time.

A nice cool drink is a welcome addition to any hot day, but how many beverage containers conveniently convert into a super-soaking toy after consumption? Actually, there is only one that we know of and thy name is Burple. What's that you say? You don't remember Burple? One can hardly blame you, for this was a very short lived product, only appearing on the market for a couple of years in the late 80s. But if you were a proud member of the Burple demographic during that era, you might just remember these accordion-esque containers that packed some punch. Let's remember together, shall we?

C3P0s Cereal

The year was 1984, and humanity had already been treated to a trilogy of science fiction films that would become one of the genres most successful franchises ever, Star Wars. With a marketing machine in full stride, it was no wonder that, alongside all the toys, posters, comics, sleeping bags, lunchboxes, etc., the breakfast cereal aisles of the nation would want to get in on the action. With everyone’s favorite droid serving as friendly pitchman, C3P0s traveled from a galaxy far, far away to the breakfast tables of Earth.

In California, carbonated soft drink fans have long enjoyed a little local delicacy called Cactus Cooler. A welcome addition to any backyard barbecue, beach party, or anywhere else the blistering sun beckons you to reach for some ice-cold refreshment, the fluorescent green nectar contained in these yellow, orange and green cans has been quenching thirsts for decades. Let’s look back at this beloved beverage.

“No bunny knows Easter better than him.” The bunny in question, of course, is the Cadbury Bunny, who clucks in a fowl sort of way, and strangely enough, lays eggs - Cadbury Crème Eggs. With the exception perhaps of Peeps and Robin’s Eggs, few things signify springtime festivities quite like these little chocolate-coated beauties. Creamy filling made to look like the inside of an egg, with a hard milk chocolate shell, the Cadbury Crème Egg come around only once a year. When they hit the shelves, it’s time to get enough to last through the most difficult of cravings.

Of the many modern urban myths that tangentially involve breakfast foods, there is one universally accepted truth that has been handed down unchanged from successive generations since its inception in 1962. Unaffected by the march of time, immune to the threat of the frozen microwave breakfast brigade, this truth goes marching onward in the whispers of knowing children, and in the late-night binge by their parents who remember too late to save themselves: if you eat Cap’n Crunch too quickly, or for too long, you will experience the dreaded Cap’n Crunch Mouth. CCM is an unfortunate malady that shreds the gums and roof of the mouth, rendering the subject useless for the next four to eight hours. Depending on the severity of the damage and the sensitivity of the subject, one conceivably could suffer for several days, unable to chew anything more complicated than oatmeal, which, incidentally, is where Cap’n Crunch got his start.

You can't let your kid go thirsty during his or her lunch period or on those long field trips, but the alternatives haven't always been plentiful. Sure, milk is the most nutritious offering, but it doesn't do so well for long periods without refrigeration. And, while soda doesn't require the same demands, it is neither healthy, nor the most friendly packaging for the typical bagged lunch. Parents desperate for choices rejoiced in the early 80s with the introduction of Capri Sun, a juice beverage contained within a handy metal pouch - one that has found its way into countless lunches over the years.
