Casper, The Friendly Ghost

Have you ever noticed that the sinister spirits are the ones who get all the press? Meanwhile, for over 65 years, one benevolent soul, Casper, has lived a virtuous (after)life - the Gandhi of the ghost world, as it were. Possessing not a single sadistic bone in his body (nor any other bones for that matter), Casper’s intentions were purely peaceful; he just wanted some friends, and we rooted him on in his quest. Today, we thought it was time to give some props to the apparition you couldn’t help but love, Casper, The Friendly Ghost.

In the world of snack foods, there is perhaps no better representation of the “American Dream” than the inspiring story of a humble man named Wally Amos. He grew up in Tallahassee, Florida and learned from his aunt how to make her celebrated chocolate chip cookies. And while it took him many years, Wally “Famous” Amos learned that if you do what you love, the rewards can be amazing. His Famous Amos cookies surged in popularity throughout the 80s and are now found just about anywhere that cookies are sold.

Surprisingly, it all started with a mere change purse, one adorned with the face of a sweet little mouthless kitty – a nice little product that one would imagine would make for a cute little short-lived fad. But “fad” doesn’t even begin to describe the magnitude, the enormous impact, the marketing machine, the iconic status that this darling little feline we know as Hello Kitty would have on the world.

He was a man of few words, those of which had clearly been plagiarized from Santa Claus. He was green, he was a giant, and had it not been for an extreme makeover, he might never have found his way into our collective hearts. Hawking his wares of freshly canned vegetables, he is none other than the Jolly Green Giant. Let’s take a look back at this memorable mascot.

Mr. Owl

One wonders how many questions the wise Mr. Owl fielded over the year from the various critters in the forest. As it stands, he will always be remembered for that one particularly iconic question, posed to him by a young boy, who innocently asked, “Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?” Of course, our fine-feathered friend succumbs to temptation, forgoes science in favor of flavor, and after chomping through the dense candy shell to get to his chocolaty prey, proclaims “three!”

The Keebler Elves

With a taste so uncommonly good, it’s hard to believe that their delicious treats came from a hollowed-out tree. But not just any old tree - this one contained magical ovens, each one manned by the diminutive bakers known fondly to us as the Keebler Elves. And throughout their long history, they have continued to tantalize all who come within sight or smell of their irresistible specialty – cookies! He sports a hat reminiscent of Robin Hood, his matching pants as forest green as his message. He is an official spokes-owl for the National Forest Service and his name is Woodsy. And, for the last four decades, he has probably done more to spread the word about environmentalism than even Al Gore.
